5-Word Movie Review: Tropic Thunder

Politically Incorrect Humor Scores Big

Final Thoughts: For some reason, the Internet likes to perpetuate the myth that Ben Stiller is funny.

He isn’t – at all.

Still, the 42-year-old funnyman – and I use the word ‘funny’ loosely – occasionally has fluke moments of comedic genius. In 1998, he wowed movie audiences with his patented “semen hair gel” gag in There’s Something About Mary, and in 2001, he riveted them with his Oscar-worthy performance as dumb-as-a-rock supermodel, Derek Zoolander.

Regardless of these two flukes, I seriously doubted that a film written, directed and produced by Mr. Stiller would be any good.

Thankfully, I was wrong.

Tropic Thunder is hilarious from start to finish, and the comedy only falls flat in a couple of cringe-worthy scenes with Tom Cruise’s foul-mouthed character, Lester.

Someone who worked on the script must have thought having Mr. Scientologist curse profusely and dance to hip-hop would be hilarious, but they were grossly mistaken.

All in all, go see Tropic Thunder, because this may very well be the last funny Ben Stiller movie ever.

You must have broken your funny bone as a child and never recovered if you thought that the scenes with Tom Cruise were not funny. They were hillarious. I think your just racist. Posted 08/16/2008 12:22 AMReply
