Duke Fights Back Against Andrew Giuliani

It’s about time a different Giuliani’s name got dragged through the mud. This time it’s the former mayor’s son, Andrew.

This whole Duke lawsuit isn’t going away and it’s not pretty. To catch you up to speed, the younger Giuliani is pursing legal action against Duke and the golf coach for being kicked off the team. The ambitious athlete aspired to be a pro golfer, despite never finishing higher than 36th place in a tournament, but it’s his getting kicked off the team that will clearly be the reason for his lack of success.

The case trucks on in courts and yesterday Duke University lawyers filed documents disputing claims made by Giuliani. The TimesNews.com reports that the filings say:

"Put simply, Giuliani had no right to play varsity golf; he had an opportunity for the privilege to be part of a team, one ... that he squandered through his own conduct.''

What kind of conduct could that be, you wonder? Court documents have the details:

His conduct became a problem this year, according to the court documents. He flipped a putter, broke a driver, gunned his car engine in a golf course parking lot and threw an apple in the face of one of his teammates.

He threw an apple in the face of one of his teammates?

I’m pretty sure they don’t allow that on the PGA.

Duke complains that Giuliani didn't follow through with the university's grievance process.

Maybe so. But this was a university which fired a 16-year veteran coach and canceled a team's entire season (when did you last hear that being done by a college?) without any grievance process at all.

And which refused to even look at any exculpatory evidence when the team tried to present proof of their innocence.

Does Duke have a grievance process for student athletes? That will surely come as news to some people...
