I Don't Think I Want People In 2055 To See This Video

I Don't Think I Want People In 2055 To See This VideoI Don't Think I Want People In 2055 To See This Video

Apparently in 2005 Penn State created a time capsule to celebrate their sesquicentennial (150 year anniversary for everyone else). Now that I think of it I have seen the time capsule - it's in a case in the HUB near the murals. So the plan is to open the capsule in 2055, which btw will be Joe Paterno's 89th year coaching the Nittany Lions, but after watching the first part of the video I think we should destroy it. You really want the people of 2055 knowing the president of the university looked like this?

This is part one of the 45-minute DVD that was included in the time capsule (will we have DVD players in 2055?) that also included a photo album, LED lights from the Beaver Stadium scoreboard, a THON bracelet among other things. The video has interviews with students but more importantly it features an interview with former vice president of student affairs Vicky Triponey, here's what she had to say about Penn State:

"What brought me to Penn State is, really I believe, the sense of community. When I interviewed for the opportunity here I was not quite sure I wanted to be in a place so large. I had this image of major research universities being huge, bureaucratic, complex places and not very student centered. But I was pleasantly surprised to learn when I started to interview and meet the wonderful people at Penn State that this is a different experience this is not what you would envision for a major research university. It really does have an incredible sense of community, a sense of belonging, a real sense of pride of people being a part of the family"

How'd that all work out for you Vick? Thanks for helping to destroy that sense of community, sense of belonging and sense of pride.

So can we please remove this DVD and put something else in there. Maybe this video instead? That's my choice.

Hopefully, DVD technology will be lost by 2055, and they won't be able to play the video. Posted 06/23/2008 12:31 PMReply

Hell yeah! Saw the video off of Fimoculous, and it has been my favorite video for the last 5 minutes. Posted 06/23/2008 6:20 PMReply

@psuper_dave: I assume you're talking about the Thunderheist video. I was going to write an entire post about it, but someone would have ripped my head off for posting something that's not Penn State related. Posted 06/23/2008 6:41 PMReply

Great catch.

My first thought on the video was how appropriate that they decided to put a marketing video in the time capsule. My second thought was none of these students talked about the challenging courses or the professor that inspired them. The girl that mentioned the Playboy anecdote was the only one that even came close to saying anything about academic rigor, but only in a backhanded way, i.e. not everyone is drunk all the time, some of have to study. Ringing endorsement that.

Most alumni who think at all about Penn State are obsessed with how much longer the University will be stuck with JoePa. They really should be concerned with how much longer Graham will be here. Oh, but then again they are products of Penn State.

BTW, Ha-mace keep of the good work. I've been disappointed with new bloggers here at OTR.
