We know you’re all out of school, but we’re going to attempt to keep you abreast on Michigan news this summer with a new feature. Similar to Fresh Cream, Ripe Produce will feature local UMich news that’s “ripe for the reading.” Here are five summer stories you must read.
* The famous Times Square Naked Cowboy is suing the makers of M&M’s for using his “bit” in their latest advertisements. The ever-opinionated UMich blogger Lauren explains why "bit thievery" should be the least of the guitarist’s concerns.
* Jordan Barnes, the star linebacker of Homestead Senior High School, confirmed that he will be attending the University of Michigan to play for the Wolverines after he graduates. Expect to see him on campus in the very near future...
* Wolverines head coach Rich Rodriguez may have to fork over four million dollars to West Virginia University, if a letter he signed in December is used as evidence to prove he was aware of the buyout clause in his old contract. I hope Michigan pays him well…
* UMich researcher Robert U. Simpson stressed that low levels of vitamin D can lead to a higher risk of heart failure. Considering the sun is the best source of vitamin D, this is yet another reason to head to the beach as much as possible in the summer.
* On July 1st, Kathy White, a law professor at the Wayne State University Law School, will become the new chairwoman of the University of Michigan Board of Regents. What does this mean to the average Michigan student? Absolutely nothing.
