From the man whose campaign ad mocked Obama for being a "celebrity", Senator John McCain was seen with an unusual one himself in late August.
On Monday morning, August 25th, McCain and popular Latin reggae-ton star Daddy Yankee had a private meeting that was closed to the public. He appeared with the star at Central High School in downtown Phoenix which his wife, Cindy McCain attended. McCain spoke before a group of bored strategically chosen, predominately Hispanic students. When the Latin star walked onstage, the students went crazy
.
According to Billboard Magazine, his 2007 album, El Cartel: The Big Boss, was the most popular record in all Latin music categories.
Hessy Fernandez, McCain's spokeswoman who handles Latino media, said, "It goes to show that John McCain is someone who can appeal to anybody".
According to her, McCain and Ramon Ayala, which is Daddy Yankee's real name, met when they were both featured in Time Magazine as two of the top 100 most influential people of 2006.
Regardless of the relationships' validity, I personally feel it is a popularity ploy to boost Hispanic votes. It's laughable that this straight-laced Senator thought enough of the Hispanic vote to link up with this popular artist...with often raunchy lyrics. Daddy Yankee said on New York's Hot 97 that one of the reasons he supports McCain is he approves his stance on immigration as this issue is a personal one for him.
...Puerto Rican citizens are U.S. citizens right? I'm just saying...
