Music Spotlight: Nick Rose

Nick Rose, who's part of the indie band Sweet Thing based in Canada, hasn't been too focused on his solo efforts, yet the neglected project has set off a soft spark. Rose's solo sound is different from the musical offerings of Sweet Thing, in fact, it's vastly different; think sitting on a back porch on a hot Sunday afternoon watching the condensation bead up on a glass of lemonade, and you'd get the folk-kissed music of Nick Rose.

Rose hasn't only been dedicated to music, at one time he pursued degrees in history and acting; though music won the race. He studied history at the University of Toronto and acting at Ryerson University; as an undergrad, Rose learned a lesson that usually takes people years to grasp, "I learned that nobody is gonna chase after you if you aren't getting s-hit done - what you put in, is what you get out."

Rose made the right choice in taking the beaten path of the musician, sighting expanded creative control as one of his favorite aspects of being a musician, "As an actor, sometimes you feel like you don't have any creative control, that you're just a small piece of a huge puzzle and there are so many variables (script, director etc) that need to fall into place for it all to work (you can't really just sit in your room and practice acting). But with music, you have more control over the creative side. You can sit there with a guitar and couple ideas and before you know it you have a song. That's the part I like the most, the freedom to create. Playing in a band is pretty fun too."
