Vanderbilt and Northwestern Surprise The Country By Not Being Terrible At Football This Season

Holy shit, what’s happening in the world of football? Some of the NCAA’s most disrespected teams are actually winning games.

Vanderbilt’s unexpected rise in the SEC has caused skepticism, optimism and complete and utter shock. Just this weekend, Vandy beat #13 ranked Auburn, leaving the Commodores undefeated... WTF?

Matthew Zemek is certainly surprised, check outn his cliché-laden Fox Sports commentary:

Pinch yourself. Rub your eyes. It won't matter. If you thought that hell would freeze over before Vanderbilt became the center of the college football universe, you must have needed a parka on Saturday in Nashville. On a day when a sport's longtime punching bag finally entered the ring in a heavyweight fight, Bobby Johnson's boys didn't flinch.

College football has seen many improbable events in its 139-year history. But the notion that Vanderbilt could host a big game and win it flies right in the face of every logical inclination. For decades, the Commodores have been the doormat of the SEC, a program that many thought should not belong in America's most cutthroat conference. The idea that the downtrodden 'Dores — the Charlie Brown who would always have a Lucy named Arkansas, Kentucky or Tennessee pull the football away at the last moment — could conquer a program with Auburn's pedigree and stature defies the laws of common sense.

I don’t even mind the clichés, though, because, damn, he even included a Charlie Brown metaphor. Can’t argue with that.

And if Vanderbilt is the doormat of the SEC, than Northwestern may just be the toilet bowl of the Big Ten. Except this season they’re actually flush (couldn’t help it) with wins.

The undefeated team had a bye this Saturday, but they still managed to end the weekend ranked. The Wildcats landed at #22 on the USA Today poll… the first time the team has been ranked in any kind of poll since 2005. Pathetic, but still exciting.

Does anyone else smell a Northwestern-Vanderbilt match-up in the BCS Championship Bowl? Anyone? Anyone?

I wouldn't call Northwestern pathetic. They have the 3rd most Big Ten titles in the conference since 1995, only trailing OSU and Michigan in that category. Really, the 'Cats aren't that bad, nor have they been that bad in quite a while. Posted 10/06/2008 3:37 PMReply

Shut the hell up with Northwestern in the toilet bowl. Saying that just shows you don't know shit (AHHAHAHAH I CAN MAKE HILARIOUS PUNS TOO) about football. Posted 10/08/2008 9:00 PMReply
