Before I moved to Ohio, I had never heard of Sweetest Day. Now, after being here for the past 4 years, it is a holiday that is very common to me, and that I have actually become to enjoy. It is a day that I get a gift (hint, hint Rob)! It really is great. But, I thought I would give you freshmen some tips in case you haven't heard about Sweetest Day, because it is celebrated here and it definitely helps you have an even better weekend.
Who celebrates Sweetest Day and when?
Sweetest Day is traditionally a Midwest holiday that is celebrated on the third Saturday of October. Ahem, making it 10/18/08- THIS SATURDAY! This is a holiday for couples very similar to Valentine's Day - just with less extravagant gifts. But nonetheless, it is an important holiday on campus.
How should you celebrate & what should you give?
Since the origin of Sweetest Day dates back to the early 1800's when Cleveland candy makers gave out candy to newspaper boys, mail carriers, orphans, the elderly, and poor children, many people stick with the "sweet" theme. So if you do not want sweets on this special day, I suggest you make a wish list and share it with your boyfriend so he knows exactly what you want.
Who do you give a gift to on Sweetest Day?
Just like Valentine's Day, Sweetest Day gifts are required amongst couples and well received by family and close friends. If you do not want to send a gift, just remember to give a card and at least to say "Happy Sweetest Day".
I hope these tips help you have a great weekend.
