Penn State at Iowa Preview

This week, the No. 3 Nittany Lions return from a week of rest to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

There is no doubt that the Iowa squads the last few seasons are no where near the caliber of the Iowa squads from the beginning of this decade. However, the Hawkeyes are still a decent team that Penn State might have a little trouble with.

Iowa's offense is led by running back Shonn Greene, who has ran the ball for 1257 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Hawkeyes quarterback, Ricky Stanzi, has done a decent job as a sophomore, throwing the ball for 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns. Shutting down Greene will be the key for the Penn State defense. When Greene runs the ball, the Hawkeyes score points, shutting him down will shut down this offense.

The Iowa defense is strong in the middle with tackles Mitch King and Matt Hroul leading this pack. However, the front seven is still in a rebuilding phase and haven't quite clicked. The Hawks had a lot of holes to fill in the off season, so I don't think this unit is completely on the same page.

The Hawkeyes shouldn't pose a real threat for the Lions, who are still riding the momentum from the Ohio State victory and just had a week of rest. The Hawkeyes might give the Lions a game, but in the end, the Lion offense will be too much to handle.

I'm not sure how you could call IOWA an easy apponent when that have beaten Penn State 6 of the last 7 games... Posted 11/10/2008 4:46 PMReply
