Amanda Lorber's Not So Sweet

Amanda Lorber's Not So Sweet
Uh-oh, looks like another Columbia/NYU rivalry! MTV’s The Paper’s leading lady (and presumed villain) Amanda Lorber was wildly criticized by Columbia Spectator’s Alexandria Symonds earlier this year for being “overbearing and annoying.”

After the publishing of this review about two months ago, Lorber has decided to fire back with a poisonous email proving to Symonds that Lorber does indeed rank top 10 in the Who’s Who of TV Villains.

Symonds’ review of the television show was not only accurate but it was a godsend. After watching the show and reading the review, I couldn’t help but laugh because she portrayed Lorber just as she is - an annoying, self-absorbed 17 year old.

[Here's a piece of the action below]

"You, Ms. Symonds, are obviously a fundamentally bitter woman. You degrade the work ethic and academic values of a 17-year-old in order to cure your self-consciousness and upset at perhaps never being recognized for your work when you're through with "The Specator." In fact, if my staff hadn't been excitedly 'googling' every article written about our (national television) show, I would never had come across your disgusting piece."

But let’s get real, who hasn’t been an obnoxious teenager? Although I can’t argue wanting to wring her neck while watching the show, I have to step back and realize that we’ve all been there before.

From neurotically picking out her outfits for the week to being left behind at home while friends are out, these events just highlight another day in the life of a teenager. Lorber just has the misfortune of having her embarrassing meltdowns televised and cleverly edited by MTV producers. Sure, she could have easily declined participation in the show but living in a reality TV-obsessed culture, what teenager would?

Going off to college is hard enough but Lorber now has to worry about the stigmas against her from fans of the show, some of who will soon become her classmates. So as Lorber leaves Cypress Bay behind and gets ready to move into her NYU dorm, she’ll not only be packing a comforter and bedsheets but a repertoire of hate mail for those who dare to criticize her.

Why does everyone see Amanda as the villian? If anything, that whiny, two-faced "friend" Alex should be the villain of the show. I think she came off as annoying because of how articulated and mature she was compared to her peers. From all the episodes she never stooped to petty putdowns like some of the staff did.
