So the Anatomy department at UC Irvine uses rats and frogs to help teach their students. Is that surprising to anyone? As a matter of fact, I would be more than happy to donate the troop of rats that scurry around my garage and garbage cans at night. I dissected plenty of "weird" shit is high school and there is really nothing weird about it. But the people at PETA had a serious problem with the experiments and let the school know.
To be honest, I am not necessarily disappointed in PETA because this is kinda what makes their lives worth something, but what is with the nark that told PETA. The rats were not even harmed.
The New University reports:
Although PETA correctly claimed that students involved in the lab insert a chemical into the dissection rat’s brain, the animal rights organization failed to mention the anesthesia applied to these animals prior to dissection, which prevents the animal from feeling anything.
The first lab involved damaging the midbrain of a rat to affect its behavior in ways similar to the effects of Parkinson’s disease.
“It is important to stress that, contrary to PETA’s news release, no students are forced to do this surgery,” Streidter stated. “In fact, only one person per team can physically do the surgery, and all students are instructed on page one of the manual/syllabus to contact the Teaching Assistant if they ‘are not comfortable working with animal subjects.”
The rats are probably stoked because when they come out of anesthesia they are fed and kept safe. This experiment could help save lives in the future. Get over it people.
