Residents in the city of Los Angeles are trying to get rid of all the overnight campers in their neighborhoods. They have been complaining to city officials that these filthy low-lives are polluting their areas with criminal activity and human waste.
Many of those campers are people who are just four wheels away from being homeless.
Although many have jobs or receive disability checks, they don’t earn enough to be able to rent an apartment. Many used to own homes in these neighborhoods but due to the foreclosure crisis and economic recession, they have lost almost all of their property.
With that said, there is no guarantee that the complaining residents won’t end up in the same boat as those campers. No one is immune from the economic downturn. These campers were just unfortunate enough to end up on the streets first. Even the city officials could lose their jobs. If and when that happens, who’s going to get the last laugh?
I admire the campers for making the best of their situation, despite the insults constantly being hurled at them. Everyone has to make due with what they have and if this is their way of survival, so be it. City officials and homeowners will just have to accept that., whether they like it or not.
