“Going Green” is harder than it sounds, especially in this age of mass consumption. And this is why I am ecstatic about the new in the “Think Green” shopping area in the student union. It doesn’t matter if this movement started off as a trend showcased in a new hipster magazine, but the fact that the administration implemented a realistic way to market green efforts to the average apathetic students.
Many of the products showcased have been previously sold on the campus. But now the university is making a strong statement in presenting all the goods available in a consolidated and appealing way.
Hopefully with the increased visibility, picking up a recycled notebook for class or laptop case made of plastic bottles, will become second nature to college students who may not even realize the environmental impact that they are making. And for those students who do feel like actively participating in green efforts, this new corner in Ackerman’s shopping haven will make life just a little easier.
Kudos to the university for trying to make a difference. Now, it is up to the students to make good on their promises of being forward thinking and politically aware.
